ANFET Editorial Statement Clarifying ANFET’s Position on the Sudan Conflict and Regional Alignments

March 31, 2026

Recent comments have suggested that ANFET’s editorial analysis, “Iran-Sudan Realignment: A Shifting Red Sea Order and Its Implications for Eritrea’s Democratic Struggle” (available, may imply support for one side or another in the Sudan conflict. We appreciate the concern and welcome the opportunity to clarify our position publicly and unequivocally.

ANFET does not support, endorse, or align with any party in the Sudan war- not SAF, not RSF, not Iran, not the UAE, and not any external military actor.

The editorial is a geopolitical assessment, not a political alignment. Its purpose is to analyze how shifting regional dynamics affect Eritrea’s democratic struggle and the weakening of the PFDJ regime’s external pillars.

The article describes- but does not endorse- the actions of regional powers. It highlights the risks and opportunities created by a changing Red Sea order. Nowhere does it call for Eritrean democratic forces to take sides in Sudan’s war or to involve themselves in any proxy confrontation.

The editorial’s central message is internal and civic:

“Only a united Eritrean platform can transform regional change into national freedom.”

This reflects ANFET’s long-standing principles:

1. Non-alignment in foreign conflicts

Eritrea’s democratic movement must remain independent of regional rivalries and avoid entanglement in proxy wars.

2. Sovereignty and independence of action

Eritrea’s future must be shaped by Eritreans. No foreign capital- whether in the Gulf, the Horn, or beyond — should dictate the direction of our democratic struggle.

3. Responsible regional awareness

Understanding geopolitical shifts is essential, but awareness is not alignment. Analysis is not endorsement.

The Iran–Sudan editorial reflects these principles. It warns of regional vacuums, underscores the fragility of PFDJ’s external alliances, and calls for Eritrean unity. Any interpretation suggesting that ANFET is aligning with foreign military actors is inconsistent with both the content of the article and the values of ANFET.

ANFET remains committed to sober, factual, and independent analysis that strengthens Eritrea’s democratic movement and protects its sovereignty.
